Eats: Bagel + tomato = a winning combination
Short and sweet for a Sunday…
I ate a lot of bagels when I was in New York. Truth be told, I don’t know how I didn’t turn into one. Every morning, wherever we were staying, I yelped nearby delis and went wandering in search of that doughy deliciousness topped with lashings of cream cheese. They have all these fancy bagels in New York – pumpernickel, honey wheat, garlic, onion, sesame – but I always went for either plain or cinnamon raisin. I’m a simple girl with simple tastes.
We went to Katz Deli one morning for brunch (yes, the Katz Deli of When Harry Met Sally fame) and while my glutton of a husband gorged on an enormous pastrami on rye, I just wanted a plain bagel with cream cheese (and a root beer). The menu had plain bagels with cream cheese followed by a note in brackets that you should at least ask for tomato. Why not?
Oh my gosh. I’m not totally converted from my plain bagel and cream cheese, but it adds something really special to the combo. You should try it sometime and tell me what you think. Any other winning bagel combos I need to know about?
